ABSTRACT

Introduction Urinary incontinence negatively impacts the quality of life and can harm work activities, causing presenteeism in health professionals and decreasing the quality of care and patient safety. The objective of this study is to explore the self-perception of health workers who suffer from urinary incontinence as a predisposing factor for presenteeism. Methods Mixed study of an exploratory-descriptive nature. The sample was selected in a non-probabilistic and intentional way by criterion and convenience with a size of 14 volunteers, considering the saturation of the information. Reliability criteria defined by Guba for the process and analysis of thematic data were considered. Results The sample had a mean age of 38.9 + 7.1 years and a mean SPS-6 score of 15.8 + 3.5 points, showing alteration in the dimension of avoiding deconcentration. The narratives in the case study provide relevant information on how urinary incontinence affects the work performance of health workers through the interruption in their day, decreases the quality of clinical care, and increases their anxiety regarding their environment. Conclusions Urinary incontinence and presenteeism are subjective, and multidimensional experiences affect work performance. Therefore, further studies are recommended to identify predictor variables and the economic losses associated with this condition to establish improvements in the work environment and the self-care of female employees seeking greater benefits and better levels of efficiency in the organization

ABSTRACT

Objective: to understand the experiences of presenteeism in nursing professionals from hospital services during the COVID-19 pandemic. Method: qualitative study, anchored in historicaldialectical materialism. Thirty nursing workers participated in the research, divided into six online focus groups, analyzed based on Hermeneutics-Dialectics. Results: three categories of analysis emerged: "Worsening presenteeism in the pandemic context"; "Why did I go to work sick: the worker's decision or precarious work?"; "Old problems, permanent struggle". Despite the illness of professionals by COVID-19, presenteeism in the pandemic was marked by institutional pressure to return to work, mental suffering and lack of recognition and humanization. Among the factors that led to presenteeism, the lack of testing for COVID-19, concern for patients, co-workers and managers, as well as fear of losing their job and/or financial benefits, stood out. Faced with this scenario, workers called for a new reality in which rights such as decent wages and safe working conditions are guaranteed. Conclusion: the pandemic context revealed a worsening of presenteeism among nursing professionals. The results pointed to the importance of concretely valuing nursing in legal terms and beyond honors.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To identify associated factors of work presenteeism and voice-related quality of life among Colombian college professors teaching online classes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Cross-sectional study with the participation of twenty-nine college professors from a public university in Colombia. An online survey on the Google Forms platform was used for data collection and included questions about voice symptoms, voice-related quality of life, and work presenteeism due to voice disorders. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 25 software (IBM Corporation). Results: Multivariate analysis showed that four variables increased the number of presenteeism days. The variable with the higher effect was voice symptoms in the month before data collection, followed by being single, the number of students, and Factor 2 of the Vocal Fatigue Index. Regarding factors associated with voice-related quality of life, multivariate analysis showed that reporting physical discomfort during phonation (Factor 2 of the Vocal Fatigue Index) was the only variable that remained statistically significant. Conclusion: Vocal fatigue and physical discomfort during phonation, as well as marital status, are associated with work presenteeism and voice-related quality of life. These results highlight the consequences of voice symptoms on health, well-being, and economy of teachers and institutions. This information is important when preventive measurements and intervention strategies for voice symptoms and vocal fatigue among teachers need to be prioritized.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To systematically review the status and factors influencing presenteeism among clinical nurses. Methods: In December 2021, CNKI, CBM, Wanfang, VIP, Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, The Cochrane Library, CINAHL, PsyclNFO and other databases were electronically searched to cross sectional studies on the current situation and factors influencing the occurrence of presenteeism among clinical nurses. The search terms mainly included presenteeism, sick at work, Stanford Presenteeism Scale, nurse, level, risk factor, influence, et al. And the search time was from the establishment of the database to November 30, 2021. Literature screening, data extraction and evaluation of the risk of bias in the included literature were done independently by two researchers, and meta-analysis was performed using Stata 15.1 software. Results: A total of 29 studies involving 13 535 clinical nurses were included. The results of the meta-analysis showed that the score of presenteeism was 17.99 [95% CI (17.02-18.95), P =0.000]. Subgroup analysis showed that presenteeism scores were higher in articles published before 2020 (ES=19.28, 95%CI: 18.41-20.15, P=0.000) and in the group of nurses aged 36 to 40 years (ES=19.27, 95%CI: 17.35~21.19, P=0.000), female (ES= 17.04, 95%CI: 14.70-19.39, P=0.000), secondary school education (ES=21.01, 95%CI: 17.76-24.26, P= 0.007), married (ES=17.49, 95%CI: 15.13-19.85, P=0.000), working for 5 to 10 years (ES=17.78, 95%CI: 16.54-19.02, P=0.000), contract (ES=17.05, 95%CI: 15.23-18.87, P=0.000), working in pediatrics (ES= 16.65, 95% CI: 15.31-17.99, P=0.000) and European region (ES =21.21, 95% CI: 20.50-21.93, P=0.000) . Conclusion: Current evidence suggests that clinical nurses are at high risk of presenteeism, which is affected by variety of factors. The managers should pay attention to the physical and mental health of nurses, identify high-risk factors as early as possible and take measures to reduce the occurrence of presenteeism and improve the quality of nursing.

ABSTRACT

Background At present, domestic research on job burnout and health-related productivity is limited to medical workers, and the impact of job burnout on health-related productivity of enterprise staff deserves attention. Objective To explore the association between job burnout and health-related productivity loss among enterprise staff. Methods A cross-sectional online questionnaire survey was conducted among enterprise staff who were selected from seven enterprises in Minhang District of Shanghai. The Chinese version of Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey (MBI-GS) was used to assess job burnout, and a questionnaire based on and modified from the WHO Health and Work Performance Questionnaire was used to assess the loss of health-related productivity. Logistic regression was used to analyze the impact of job burnout on health-related productivity under the control of selected demographic characteristics, socio-economic factors, and occupational factors. Results A total of 3489 questionnaires were recovered, and 3156 valid questionnaires were included in the statistical analysis. Among the 3156 valid questionnaires, 2228 (70.8%) respondents were assessed as suffering from job burnout, in which 1858 (59.0%) were mild to moderate job burnout, and 370 (11.7%) were severe job burnout; the median score (interquartile range) of MBI-GS was 2.18(2.69), the median rates (interquartile range) of absenteeism and presenteeism were 0.00% (0.00%) and 20.00% (50.00%), respectively. The prevalence of presenteeism significantly varied by gender, education, marital status, working years, job category, exhaustion, cynicism, professional efficacy, and job burnout (P<0.05). The prevalence of absenteeism significantly varied by education, marital status, working years, job category, exhaustion, cynicism, professional efficacy, and job burnout (P<0.05). Job burnout was positively correlated with absenteeism (r=0.157) and presenteeism (r=0.412) (P<0.01). After controlling for selected demographic characteristics, social economic factors, and occupational factors, the logistic regression showed that job burnout was associated with health-related productivity loss, the OR value remained relatively stable, and referring to negative job burnout, the OR (95%CI) of severe job burnout was 6.35 (4.52-8.92). Conclusion Job burnout of enterprise staff has a negative impact on health-related productivity. Severer job burnout associates with higher health-related productivity loss. Enterprises should pay attention to the prevention and control of job burnout to reduce health-related productivity loss.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND@#The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic may have increased the rate of presenteeism among front-line physicians. Presenteeism is the term used to describe attendance at work despite ill health that would normally prompt rest or absence from work. This study aimed to examine the associations between COVID-19 clinical practice and presenteeism among physicians.@*METHODS@#A cross-sectional study was conducted from December 2021 to January 2022. The questionnaires were distributed to 21,737 employed physicians who were members of the Japan Medical Association. Presenteeism was measured by the Work Functioning Impairment Scale. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the association between COVID-19 clinical practice and presenteeism.@*RESULTS@#Overall, 3,968 participants were included in the analysis, and presenteeism was observed in 13.9% of them. The rate of presenteeism significantly increased with both the number of COVID-19 patients treated and the percentage of work time spent treating these patients (both P values for trend < 0.001). In comparison to those not currently engaged in the treatment of COVID-19 patients, presenteeism was significantly higher among front-line (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 1.71, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.16-2.53) and second-line physicians supporting those in the front-line (aOR = 1.45, 95% CI: 1.17-1.78). There was no association between involvement in COVID-19 vaccination services and presenteeism.@*CONCLUSIONS@#The burden on front-line and second-line physicians in COVID-19 clinical practice must be minimized. Employed physicians also need to recognize the importance of communicating with their workplaces about presenteeism.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of presenteeism and its impact on the health of workers in a police corporation. Presenteeism is characterized by attendance at work, even though the worker feels sick or ill. To this end, a cross-sectional, exploratory-descriptive study was carried out, with a quantitative approach and convenience sampling. As research instruments, the Stanford Presenteeism Scale (SPS-6) and a socio-demographic and occupational questionnaire built especially for this study were used. As a result, the evaluation of presenteeism pointed out that 55.4% of the sample (p=0.2169) showed impairment in work performance by presenteeism, which is primarily associated with psychological factors (impaired ability to concentrate). It is concluded that the findings of this study will contribute to the understanding of presenteeism in this population and the subsequent implementation of preventive and health-promoting approaches.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders affect the performance of workers and can increase presenteeism, a condition in which the employee comes to the workplace but does not produce satisfactory results because he is ill. OBJETIVOS: To identify the prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms and its association with presenteeism among public health management professionals of Belem-PA, Brazil. METHODS: Cross-sectional study carried out with 88 professionals from the Municipal Health Department of Belem. A sociodemographic questionnaire was used to characterize the sample; the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire to identify the prevalence of pain, numbness, and tingling symptoms in the body; and the Stanford Presenteeism Scale to characterize presenteeism. Associations between variables were analyzed using a 5% significance level. RESULTS: Musculoskeletal symptoms in the upper and lower back were the most prevalent. Presenteeism was significantly associated with daily workload, physical activity, and the presence of diagnosed musculoskeletal diseases or injuries. In the past 12 months, musculoskeletal symptoms in the neck, upper and lower back, wrists/hands, and hips/thighs have been associated with presenteeism. In the past 7 days, presenteeism has been associated with symptoms in the upper back and lower back. CONCLUSION: The most prevalent musculoskeletal disorders in health management professionals are associated with presenteeism.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE:To inve stigate the current situation of clinical pharmacists ’job stress and presenteeism behavior in tertiary hospitals of China and study their correlation. METHODS :Using the Brief Job Stress Questionnaire (BJSQ)and the presenteeism behavior individual questionnaire ,a survey of 623 clinical pharmacists in 311 tertiary hospitals from 31 provinces in China was conducted ;by establishing Logistic model between job stress ,its various dimensions (job demand ,job control , support)and presenteeism behavior ,the correlation analysis was performed for their survey results. RESULTS :The average job pressure of the interviewed clinical pharmacists was 36.75 points;the probability of presenteeism behavior was 20.38%. Logistic regression model analysis results showed that job stress and its two dimensions (job demand ,job control )had a significant positive correlation with presenteeism behavior (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS :The job stress of clinical pharmacists in tertiary hospitals in my country is relatively high ,which is also the main reason for their presenteeism behavior. Job stress can be reduced (such as increasing the staffing appropriately ,providing reasonable rest time ,improving the job substitution of clinical pharmacists )to reduce the prevalence of presenteeism behavior.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To explore the association among job burnout, tolerance to uncertainty and working with sickness in clinical nurses. METHODS: A total of 1 159 clinical nurses from 10 cities in Henan Province and Fujian Province were recruited by stratified cluster sampling method and tested by questionnaires including the Chinese Perceived Stress Scale-14, the Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale-12, the Sickness Presenteeism Questionnaire, and the Maslach Burnout Inventory-general Survey. Bootstrap was used to analyze the association among perceived stress, tolerance to uncertainty, working with sickness and job burnout. RESULTS: Perceived stress score was(31.4±4.8), and 802(69.2%) of nurses had high perceived stress level. The score of tolerance to uncertainty was(29.8±8.5), and the score of working with sickness score was(5.5±2.0). The job burnout score was(47.9±11.8), and 570(49.2%) nurses had job burnout. Bootstrap test results showed that the perceived stress score positively affected job burnout score [standardized partial regression coefficient(β)=0.30, P<0.01]. Working with sickness score played a regulatory role between perceived stress and job burnout scores(β=0.16, P<0.01), and tolerance to uncertainty score played an intermediary role between perceived stress and job burnout scores(β=0.08, P<0.01). The regulating effect of working with sickness score played a role through the mediation of tolerance to uncertainty score. CONCLUSION: Job burnout was very serious in clinical nurses. Perceived stress can directly or through tolerance to uncertainty affect the job burnout of clinical nurses and is synergistically affected by sickness presenteeism.
